Closed-Loop Aquaponics for Martian Life Support

Why Aquaponics?

Traditional hydroponics is water and nutrient intensive. Aquaponics couples fish farming with plant growth in a symbiotic loop: fish waste → bacteria → plant nutrients → cleaner water back to fish. On Mars this closes the loop dramatically.

Goddek Multi-Loop Architecture

Mars-Specific Advantages

• Works with treated regolith after PRB detoxification.
• Low energy relative to yield when combined with 3D fractal Hügelbeete for final soil stages.
• Lava tube or habitat internal volumes can host stacked vertical systems.

Integration with Grüner Mars 60/40 Model

Aquaponics sits at the core of the Earth-Bio portion (65%). Outputs feed Hügelbeete and provide biological redundancy for the Space-Ag tech allocation.

Key Metrics (from research):
• Fish biomass conversion efficiency: ~1.5–2 kg feed → 1 kg fish
• Plant yield uplift: +30–50% vs hydroponics alone
• Water recycling: >95% in closed loops
